CAT TRAINING TIPS

Cats, for the most part, tend to be very independent. Unlike dogs they are usually not very concerned with trying to please their owners. They like to do things at their own pace and in their own way. However, with patience and persistence it is possible to train cats to do a variety of tricks. It is also possible to train cats not to do certain things such as digging in your garden or scratching your furniture.

1) Keep in mind that a cat has an extremely short attention span and is easily confused. Keep your training sessions very short. Limit the sessions to about five minutes but not much longer. If the cat is showing absolutely no interest, stop and try again later. Short frequent sessions will avoid frustration for both you and your cat.

2) To help motivate your cat try training before feeding time. If you free feed your cat you may want to stop doing this while you are trying to train him. Your cat will be much more geared towards learning if he is a bit hungry. Once you have done your session, feed your cat but after ten minutes remove the food and try again later. Do not starve the cat.

3) Never punish a cat by hitting it for doing something incorrectly. This will only teach your cat to fear you.

4) When the cat does do something right, immediately give it a food reward and lots of praise. You might want to use an extra special type of food reserved just for training sessions.

5) Keep the food rewards very small. This is not a meal. You want the cat to quickly finish the treat and continue.

6) Clickers are very useful when training a cat. They let the cat know exactly when it has done a correct behaviour and will often speed up the training process.

7) Training can be stressful on a cat. Try to make the sessions fun and enjoyable. If it is not going well stop for the day and try again later.
