FINDING THE RIGHT LEASH

Most cities and suburbs require that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. As an owner you should appreciate that these bylaws actually benefit everyone. They ensure the safety of not only of your pet but of other people and their dogs. However, just because your pet has to be leashed does not mean that you and your dog have to be restricted.

There are many different leashes on the market which will allow you and your pet to still travel together. Once your pet has learned the basic principles of leash walking there are many different leashes you can use. But it is important that your pet know how to walk properly. This means walking nicely beside you with no tension on the leash and no pulling.

If you spend most of your time in the city, you might consider getting yourself a traffic leash. These leashes are extremely short but will keep your pet close to your side at all times. If your pet knows how to heel these leashes will allow you to navigate traffic quickly and easily. You will not have to be constantly worried about the leash getting tangled or wrapped around poles or other obstacles. And you will not have to be constantly trying to wrap up a long leash in your hand.

A great leash to own is one that attaches to your waist. These are great for taking your pet out with you and it allows you to have both hands free. These are especially good if you have young children and want to push a stroller. You can still have control over your dog but your hands are free to push the stroller.

Another great leash is the retractable leash. These are great if you are going to walk your dog in parks and other relatively open safe areas. These leashes vary in length but all of them allow your dog to have more freedom.

If you walk with your dog in the evening, you might want to purchase a night leash. There are varieties of different leashes on the market that are made especially for night walks. You might want to get one that acts as a reflector so that other people can see you and your dog more clearly. Or you might want to get one which actually has a light inside. There are even leashes that have built in flashlights.

If you enjoy biking, buy yourself a special bike leash. These leashes attach directly to your bike. They also extend away from the bike so that it is much harder for the leash to interfere with the wheels. By using this leash, you can have both of your hands safely on the bike and you will not have to worry about trying to hold onto your pet. You and your pet can get out and enjoy the benefits of a bike ride.

With all the different leashes available on the market, keeping your pet on a leash does not have to be restrictive. You can still be active and take your pet with you.
