TIPS FOR ALWAYS GETTING YOUR DOG TO COME
One of the most important things you will ever teach your dog is the “come” command. If you want to be certain that your dog will come to you every time the first time there are certain things that you as an owner have to practice. Never scold a dog for coming to you. No matter how mad or upset you are, you have to make it a positive experience or you are defeating the whole point of training. Moreover, you have to do this all the time, every time. Do not call the dog to you if the consequences are going to be negative in the dog’s eyes. Do not follow the “come” command with a negative action. For example, let’s say you have to give your dog some medicine and you know he does not like it. Instead of calling your dog to you and immediately giving him his medicine; try calling your dog and then rewarding and/or playing with him first. Only after a minute or two of fun time and positive reinforcement should you give your dog the medicine. This way your dog will not associate the come command with the medicine. Another good example of using the come command in a negative way is when you take the dog to an off leash park and then call him to you and put his leash on and end the fun. In the dog’s eyes you have just given the “come” command a nasty outcome. Instead, ask the dog to sit and then reward the dog, pet him and praise him. Then put the leash on. If you have to do an activity that you know your dog is not going to like and you do not have time for play, go and get the dog. Do not call the dog to you. You always want the “come” command to remain a positive word in the dog’s mind. Looking for help and advice on training YOUR dog? This is because the owner has probably (without realizing it) used the “come” command in negative ways. Either the owner was angry when the dog did respond or when the dog did come there was a negative consequence. By ensuring that the dog always has a positive experience when it comes on command you guarantee that the dog will always come when it is called.
