How To Choose Which Pet Is Right For You, A Dog Or A Cat

Dogs or cats. Those words mean different things to different people. Which do you prefer? Those of us who have already made that decision know how satisfying it is to share our life with either a dog or a cat. Or perhaps both. Many of us love all types of animals. Even though that's true, when it comes to choosing a pet, we definitely have certain ideas. Some of us have multi pet households, where a dog or a cat may rule over the other pets. You may have friends who only have cats because they are mostly independent and can stay home alone for longer periods of time than a dog can, and because they are litter box trained, you don't have to rush home to let them out to relieve themselves. I have a mental picture in my mind of a dog sitting with his legs crossed waiting for his dog parent to come home so he can go out! It's a funny picture, but I don't think the dog is laughing.

Your lifestyle will probably dictate what type of pet you may have. If you work long hours, then a cat may be the best choice. Of course, if you'd rather have a dog, then maybe you could hire a pet sitter service to come to your home to let your dog outside a couple of times a day. That way, you can relax at work, knowing that your furry friend is not alone and uncomfortable for 12 hours a day. Pet sitters will also feed if need be. If you live in the city, they may also take your dog for a walk in the park. So much better for Fido!

Just a word of caution--always remember to check references before you hand over your dog and keys to your house. You want to be comfortable with the person coming into your home and caring for your dog.

There are many things to consider when deciding on a dog or a cat. Not all dogs or cats shed their fur, but dogs bark and cats shred the fabric on your sofa. If you visualize yourself throwing a Frisbee, you'll need a hearty dog that can run and play hard. If you just want to play with little ping pong balls, then you can have a great time with a cat. Some cats are good mousers, but some dogs are also, particularly Terrier breeds. As some Terriers were bred to be ratters many years ago.

Actually, visiting some animal shelters might help you to make up your mind. You could volunteer at your local shelter to walk the dogs and care for the cats. In this way, you'll get a very good idea of what is required for responsible pet ownership. It's a free education and the shelters can always use some extra help. The animals appreciate it, too.

Regardless of your choice, dog or cat, they will require your time, money and patience to keep them healthy and groomed. The reward to you is devotion, unconditional love, and a great bond. Some of the best friends you'll ever have ! It's been reported that having a pet extends your life and gives you better health. They are great stress relievers as they will make you smile and laugh.
