WHY DOG EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT

Little needs to be said about the need for adequate dog exercise - dog exercise is as important for your dog as regular exercise is important to you. Dogs aren't meant to remain inactive and grow fat -- a trim, well-conditioned dog will live much longer than an overweight one. Regular dog exercise will give your pet a toned heart that can cope well with the appropriate amount of body weight and be able to withstand disease well.

Dog exercise is key to your dog's health and well-being. Fit dogs tend to be more alert and content. They also get better sleep, have more energy and socialize better. Letting your dog exercise will protect it from health problems and boredom alike. Dog exercise also strengthens the bond between you and your pet.

Dogs usually love wide open spaces to run around. However, nowadays not all households have enough space for their dogs to play. You must give your dog at least three short walks a day, one of which must allow for several minutes of vigorous activity. Dogs become lazy if they are not encouraged to exercise.

Swimming is also a wonderful dog exercise. It's low-impact and complete. This dog exercise is particularly helpful for dogs who play retrieving and other competitive sports. You can also integrate retrieving games when you are swimming with your dog. Swimming in lakes or the beach is a great dog exercise for the hot summer months, since it gives him a great workout without the risk of getting overheated. Just remember to give him fresh water after a dip in the beach.

Another fun dog exercise is fetching. You can teach your dog to fetch a ball or some other toy or item designed particularly for dog fetching. You can also try letting your dog catch a Frisbee - dogs who know how to fetch balls and other items would easily figure out what to do with one.

As enjoyable as the dog exercise might be, it's advisable not to overdo things. Stop playing before your dog gets tired and bored - this will keep the dog exercise interesting for him. Allow him to rest after every dog exercise, so that he'll be looking forward to the next time he plays with you.

While giving your dog exercise, always keep in mind not to let him overheat. Avoid the hottest part of the day to do the exercise. Always provide and ample supply of fresh water for your dog so that you can avoid dehydration. Be careful not to let your dog overexert himself during any dog exercise, as this can lead to injury.

Regular exercise is beneficial to you and your dog. You must include dog exercise in his daily routine - as you know, dogs happen to like routine. His exercise routine should fit well in your schedule and you should stick to it religiously. Keep in mind that when your dog doesn't have a proper outlet for his energy, he may tend to become destructive, restless and even depressed.
