BEFORE YOU GO TO BUY AQUARIUM EQUIPMENT
You are ready to go out and buy your first tank. Or are you? Just like buying any other kind of pet, you should do your homework. Before you take off to the store and buy all kinds of gadgets and fish you should know exactly what you need and how to set it all up. There is an enormous amount of products on the market, some you will need, some you may want and others that will just end up taking space in your closet. Have a plan and a shopping list before going to the store. The first step is to decide what kind of fish you intend to buy. Then you need to select the size of tank you are going to need to keep your fish in. Different size tanks are going to require different equipment. The same goes for the type of fish that you are intending to keep. Once you have these two things decided you can start making out your shopping list of essentials that you are going to need and want. If you are planning to buy an aquarium kit or have been lucky enough to have received one as a gift you are halfway there. A lot of the work has already been done for you. You do not have to pick a filter or heater. They have probably already been included in the kit and are the right size for your tank. But if you want to do your own thing you will have to do a lot more research. Even with a kit there are a few things that you are going to want that are not in the kit. You still need to make your shopping list and check off the items that are included in the actual kit and purchase the rest separately. Would YOU like a FREE Aquarium Owners Handbook? This of course is going to depend on the types of fish you want to keep. In general you will need a filter, a heater, food, light, and decorations. Then consider what you need to keep the tank functioning. What will you need for weekly maintenance? You are going to need extra parts and supplies for your filter. You are going to need things to keep the water levels steady, you will also need things to clean the tank and of course you are going to want to decorate the tank. The decorations in your tank should be chosen with your fish in mind. Many fish like to have places to hide. Some fish prefer shady dark areas. You want to design a tank that is not only appealing to you but will provide your fish with a comfortable, stress free home. Never put anything into your tank that is not specifically designed for an aquarium. Plants you might find in the dollar store may have metal that could rust or put some other kinds of toxins into your tank. The same thing goes for wood or rocks that you might find.
