AQUARIUM TANK PLACEMENT
Getting an aquarium is very exciting. Most people who get their first tank do not put a lot of thought or planning into where they are going to put it before they start setting it up. If you want to avoid a lot needless problems put a little thought into where you are going to put your tank before you starting adding fish. Is it best not to place your tank in direct sunlight or near a window. Direct sunlight can actually affect the temperature in your tank. Also you may find yourself doing a lot more cleaning, because direct sunlight can cause algae on the glass to grow at an astonishing rate. Windows can also be very cold areas. If your windows get frosty or you can feel drafts do not place your tank in that area. The weight of your tank is something that you should carefully consider. If you are hoping to purchase a really large tank you have to be certain that you put it in a location that can tolerate the weight. Some apartment buildings actually have restrictions on the size of tanks that you can have. You should also make sure that the floor is level. What kind of surface will you be putting the tank on? Are you placing it on hardwood? Carpet? No matter how careful you are there is bound to be water on the area around the tank at some point. You want to be certain that you will be able to clean it up quickly. Another thing that you should factor into your choice of placement is electrical outlets. You want ensure that you are going to be able to plug in your filter, lights, heater and an air pump. You do not want to have cords running all over the place. You should check to see what kind, or if any equipment will be outside the tank. If your filter is going on the outside of the tank, how will this affect where you intend on placing it. Look for air ducts and vents. You do not want your tank and stand to block or sit on top on either one of these. You should be absolutely certain about where you want to put the tank before you put in any water. Anyone who owns an aquarium will tell you that trying to move an aquarium is a major undertaking. You are better off taking the time to plan where you want to put the tank rather than trying to move it later.
