CARING FOR YOUR FISH

Fish are not hard too care for. You do not have to take them for walks, they do not make noise and they do not shed, however some maintenance and care is required. Do a bit of research before buying your fish, and know what your fish is going to need before you bring him home. If you want to have healthy, happy fish set up a regular maintenance schedule and your fish will thrive.

Proper Environment

Setting up the tank is one of the most important parts of good fish care. You want your fish to be happy in their new home. When setting up and decorating your tank knowing what type of environment the fish enjoy, is very important. Certain breeds prefer a lot of plants to hide in while other fish are destructive and will destroy them. Some fish like to hide in rocks and caves while others need more space to swim.

Do not overcrowd the tank. Many beginners make the mistake of putting too many fish in their tank. Fish need room to swim and they also require oxygen. If you have too many fish there will not be enough oxygen in the tank for all of them, even if you do have an air pump.

Fish waste increases the nitrate levels in your tank, even if you are doing your proper water changes you may still have a problem with your water balance.

When purchasing fish be sure to know how big the fish will grow because your tank may not be large enough to accommodate all your fish when they reach their full sizes.

Proper Food

Many types of fish have special dietary needs, simple flakes are not going to be enough. Make sure that you know exactly what kind of food the fish you have like to eat. An improper diet can lead to a whole variety of problems in your tank. Do not overfeed your fish. All food should disappear within a matter of minutes, extra food will pollute the tank and can cause diseases.

Clean Tank

Set up a regular cleaning routine. Fish need clean water, therefore you have to change 20% of the water in the tank at least once every week. If there are only a couple of fish in the tank and it is large you may be able to stretch changes to every two weeks. The filter and heater should also be checked to ensure that they are working properly.

Another important part of fish care is checking the water on a regular basis. Maintaining the proper chemical and bacteria levels are vital to fish care. If the water is not checked on a regular basis, it could become toxic to your fish.
