KEEPING KOI PONDS CLEAN

Keeping your Koi pond clean should be one of your top priorities.  A clean pond not only makes the pond a beautiful oasis, but also keeps the Koi healthy and strong.  The pond is where the fish live, eat, and sleep, but it is also where their bathroom is too.   Not cleaning your pond is almost the same as the fish living in a bathroom toilet.

The water in the pond should almost be clear and free of any debris floating in it.  When looking into the water, you should be able to see the bottom of the pond.  If not, the pond is not clean and the proper cleaning action is needed.  Also, the Koi should seem as if they are floating in the water.

When constructing the pond, most people want it to be as beautiful as possible, the perfect plants and flowers in the pond, matched with a beautiful landscape around it.  However, no matter how beautiful the pond is, it is unsuccessful if it cannot sustain fish in the water.  A Koi pond is just a large fish tank, with the only difference being outdoor.  This large fish tank require the same care as the one inside the house.

To keep the pond clean and healthy, there are two required equipments needed to do the job.  The first one is the pump and its duty is to keep the water moving.  Moving water moves debris and other harmful items out of the pond.  The second equipment is the filtration system.  The filtration system help keep the pond water clean by removing debris from the water.  Both of these equipment should not be overlooked and without them, life in the pond will not exist.

Another way you can avoid cleanliness issues is to not overfeed your fish.   You should set a specific time to feed the Koi with the proper amount of food.  Overfeeding them will not only cause health issues, but cause the water to become polluted.  The food that is not consumed by the fish will eventually settle to the bottom and cause the water to be polluted.  This will also cause more frequent changing of the filtration system.

For a typical pond, it should be cleaned at least twice a week.  It might need more attention if the pond holds a lot more fish.   To determine how much cleaning is needed, check the pond everyday for a couple weeks, and if the pond seem to get dirty fast, you should adjust your cleaning schedule and upgrade to a larger filtration system.  Remember, a clean pond will make the pond beautiful and the keep the fish healthy.
