KOI PONDS DURING THE SUMMER
Summer is considered one of the best time for your Koi pond. With the temperature being warm throughout the day, you are able to enjoy more of your pond than you would in the colder months. However, just because the weather is nicer outside, it doesn’t mean that you can lessen maintenance on the pond. Summer months is the best time for your Koi pond, but it can also be deadly for the fish. Below are a few tips to keep in mind during the summer months to ensure your pond and the fish is healthy and lively. Oxygen During the summer months, the high heat causes the oxygen level in the pond to decrease. This can be a real danger to the Koi if proper action is not taken immediately. One way to determine low level of oxygen is to look at the Koi. If you see the Koi start hanging toward the top of the water more frequently, and they seem to be gasping for air, it’s a good sign that the oxygen level in the water is low. One way to increase more oxygen in the water is to install a water feature such as a waterfall or a fountain. The movement of the water will help increase the oxygen in the water. If installing a water feature is not possible, frequent changing of the water will need to be done. Evaporation High heat in the summer increase the water to evaporate at higher rate than other seasons. Check the pond everyday to determine the level of the water and add more water if necessary. If you add more water, remember to remove all the chlorine first. A smaller pond is more prone to a higher rate of water evaporation which result in a decrease of water level. To prevent this from happening, there is a couple equipments on the market to help deal with this problem. To determine which equipment is right for your pond, consult with the local Koi dealer for advice. Are YOU looking for everything Koi? While most parasites are not seeable by your eyes, they can be a threat to the Koi. To determine if the Koi has parasites, look at the fish behaviour. The Koi may rub against an object, shiver, or shake. Each illness is different so be sure to examine each behaviour closely. If you determine there parasites prevent in the pond, consult with a local vet or your Koi dealer immediately. While some parasites causes little damage to the Koi, other parasites such as KHV or Koi Herpes Virus can cause fatality. The summer months can be a great time to enjoy your pond if the proper maintenance and precautions is taken. A healthy pond will look beautiful and most importantly of all, the Koi will be happy!
