THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING FISH

The most exciting part of owning a fish tank is choosing the fish. This is one of the first things you should decide and you should do so before purchasing your tank. You should really try to avoid simply running out and purchasing a tank without some thought and preparation. Do some research first and then there will be less chance that you will have regrets on the decisions you made while purchasing your tank and fish.

Go to the pet store and see which kinds of fish appeal to you. Compile a list of what kinds of fish you like. Once you have your list, look at the habits and needs of each type of fish separately. You should also consider the number of fish that are on your list. Most of us would love to own a huge tank, but since that isn’t always possible you may need to curb your list a bit. The general rule for fish is, one inch of fish per gallon. Be sure that when you are making your calculations you account for growth. Many tropical fish will grow to be quite large, therefore you should base your numbers on the size of an adult fish and not on the purchase size.

There are certain other things you should also consider when selecting your fish.

How aggressive are the fish?

Fish can be both territorial and aggressive. You want to be certain that the fish you select will get along, otherwise you might be buying one of your fish an expensive dinner.

Do they like to live alone or in schools?

Popular fish like members of the tetra family do best when they are kept in schools.

Males and Females

Selecting fish by sex can be very important. Certain types of tropical male fish do not get along well with other males of the same species. Swordtails are a good example of this. Three females to every male is a good ratio if you want to keep more than male in your tank.

What temperature is ideal?

The general range for a tropical tank is 75 to 82 degrees F. , but there are types of fish that might require either cooler or warmer water to thrive. If you want a community tank you would be wise to stay away from these.

Water?

Most species do well in a tank that has a ph of about 7. But there are breeds that prefer slightly more acidic or alkaline conditions.

What type of environment do they like?

Some fish really like to hide. They prefer a tank that has lots of plants and shady areas in order to feel safe.

What kinds of food does this fish like?

Most tropical fish will eat flake but some fish do much better with specialty foods. If you do not want to have to but a lot of different types of foods for your tank then check the dietary requirements before you purchase your fish.
