CARING FOR THE ANIMALS IN YOUR LIFE

We all know the importance of taking care of ourselves. But what about the animals in our lives? Providing for your pet goes beyond proper nutrition and visits to the vet. As they're living longer lives, it's important to think about what we can do to enhance them.

A pet bed is a great way to start. Ideal for a dog or cat, pet beds come in many sizes, shapes, and styles for all budgets. If your pet is getting older or needs something extra soft to lay on, an orthopaedic or foam filled bed is a great choice. They'll conform to your pet's shape and provide all the needed comfort. More basic fillers are those like sawdust or poly-fill. They provide long-lasting, plush support. If you want a super soft bed for your animal, look for an overstuffed one. Many pet beds are easily cleanable, as their covers can be removed before washing.

Pillows or cushions made for humans aren't ideal beds for your pet. They made be made with materials harmful to your animal, such as non-natural fillers or small, decorative beads. They're probably not durable enough either. So when choosing a bed, whether it's orthopaedic for your older dog, or just a soft, warm spot for a small kitten, look for durable, high quality construction that's also safe.

If you've recently added a water feature to your home or garden, you may notice your dog or cat looking at it with envy or even trying to sneak a quick drink from it. Why is this? Animals love running water. The moving water stays cleaner than it does sitting stagnant in a bowl. A small indoor fountain can be a great drinking spot for an animal. But if you're looking to use a fountain for this purpose, make sure you keep your animal's safety in mind. Fountains should be cleaned regularly. You'll need to use a cleaner that is all natural and pet friendly. The fountain materials should be natural and safe as well.

If you've got birds visiting your garden, consider adding a bird bath. It's a great source of water for your feathered friends to drink from and clean themselves in. Other animals in your yard will appreciate it as well. Bird baths can have either standing or running water, so pick a style that works for your garden. They should also be cleaned regularly, using a safe, all natural cleaner to remove any dirt and bacteria build-up.

Bird houses and bird feeders should always be on any animal lover's list of caring for outdoor wildlife. A bird feeder will attract birds to your backyard. A house nearby will encourage some to stick around, providing you with an excellent opportunity to bird watch and relax. Birds in the backyard are also a great educational experience for young children. If you want to attract specific birds, like cardinals or hummingbirds, look for feeders designed specifically for them. Cardinal feeders are typically bright red, while ones for hummingbirds are made for them to fly up to.

Taking care of our pets throughout their lives is important, not only for their health and well-being, but for ours as well. Animals bring untold benefits to our lives, including relaxation and stress relief. The benefits of owning a pet can't be beat, but don't forget to show them some love and attention as well. They'll be sure to love you back for it.
