HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME READY FOR A NEW PET
Bringing a new pet into your home can be an exciting experience; however, there are many things that need to be done to prepare your house and family for the arrival of a new pet. If there are children in the house, it is important to teach them how to behave around a pet. Make sure they know the rules and responsibilities that will be included with the arrival of a pet. Allowing your children to help with the care of the new animal will help them to become better acquainted with the animal. Also realize that the arrival of a new pet is not only a change for your family, but for the pet as well. Your house will be a completely new territory for the pet. Making sure that certain things are taken care of before the arrival of your pet will help you and the pet become more comfortable in your home at a faster pace. The types of things that you may need will depend on which type of animal you will be bringing home. For example, if your new pet is a kitten, you will need a scratching post to help your cat focus their attention (and claws) on the post rather than the furniture. Cats will also require a litter box for restroom breaks. What You'll Need No matter what animal you may be bringing home, you will need a food dish, water bowl, a place for your pet to use the restroom, and toys. Contact your veterinarian for more information on preparing your home for a new pet. A veterinarian may be able to suggest helpful books or local pet stores to ensure that you have everything you need before you take your pet home. If you plan on being away from home for longer periods of time you may want to consider buying a feeder. Feeders will automatically dispense the appropriate amount of food into the animal's dish. This ensures that your pet is properly fed no matter what your schedule looks like. Fresh water is an absolute must for all animals so that they do not become dehydrated during the day. Dogs, cats, and other 4 legged animals will often use a water bowl, however, there are automatic dispensers as well. The water in these dispensers will not be as fresh as the water you place in a bowl, but it will ensure that your pet will not become dehydrated. Finally, having some appropriate toys around the house will help welcome your new pet into their new environment. Toys will provide you with multiple ways to interact with the new pet and will help the pet to relax and have fun in their new home. It is best if you are fully prepared and have purchased these items before you bring home your new pet.
